What has informed our charter school design?

People are always asking us "how'd you come up with that?". Often we respond that "it came from ___________." Education is complicated enough; we're not here to add layers of complexity by reinventing the wheel and trying to pass it off as something else. The fact is, in most cases we know what works for kids. It's not an innovation problem, it's an execution problem. So having said all that, here's a sample of resources informing our work:

Books we're reading:

From High School to College - Michael W. Kirst & Andrea Venezia

College Knowledge - David Conley

How to Change the World - David Bornstein

No Child Left Behind? - Paul Peterson & Marty West

Spinning Wheels - Frederick Hess

Left Back - Diane Ravitch

Choice and Competition in American Education - Paul Peterson

Websites we frequent:

Education Next - a comprehensive resource for getting up to speed on current trends in American education

Education Sector

Center for Education Policy Research

Education Gadfly - a weekly bulletin from the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation

Other charter schools we're talking to:

MATCH School - Boston, MA www.matchschool.org

Boston Collegiate Academy - Dorchester, MA www.bostoncollegiate.org

Green Dot Public Schools - Los Angeles, CA www.greendot.org

Friendship Public Schools - Washington DC, www.friendshipschoolsdc.org

Downtown College Prep - San Jose, CA www.downtowncollegeprep.org

Achievement First Schools - New York, NY and New Haven, CT www.achievementfirst.org

Uncommon Schools - Greater New England- www.uncommonschools.org

WE BELIEVE that a network of small, high-quality, college-preparatory charter schools can expand opportunities for families and improve achievement for all students. That school choice in general, and charter schools in particular, are vital to catalyzing improvement in public education. And finally, only by realigning our collective vision on
student outcomes can we effect real change in our schools.
